How Epiphytic Are Filmy Ferns? A Semi-Quantitative Approach

نویسندگان

چکیده

Similar to plants in many other families, members of the Hymenophyllaceae use numerous substrates for growth, e.g., soil, rocks or tree bark. However, substrate preference does not only differ among species but can also vary same species. There have been several attempts past appropriately capture this variation, none proved feasible was replicated any subsequent work. In our approach, we textual information from sources like checklists, floras and descriptions come up with a quantitative index 450 filmy ferns (=c. 75% all family) epiphytic, lithophytic terrestrial growth. We show that majority clear habitat preferences, while strict specificity is rather uncommon. Our compilation will be an important input future ecological phylogenetic studies family, presented approach much more general interest: it immediately applicable taxonomic groups should eventually allow us replace current assigning distinct categories (epiphyte, lithophyte terrestrial) by one finally reflects biological variability appropriately.

Gametophyte ecology and demography of epiphytic and terrestrial tropical ferns.

Factors that influence the distribution of ferns are poorly understood and likely reflect the ecology of both the sporophyte and the gametophyte generation. Little study has been done on the ecology of the gametophyte generation, especially in regard to tropical species. The goal of this study was to examine demography and the influence of light and disturbance on the distribution of the gameto...

Survival and Growth of Epiphytic Ferns Depend on Resource Sharing

Locally available resources can be shared within clonal plant systems through physiological integration, thus enhancing their survival and growth. Most epiphytes exhibit clonal growth habit, but few studies have tested effects of physiological integration (resource sharing) on survival and growth of epiphytes and whether such effects vary with species. We conducted two experiments, one on indiv...

rbcL data reveal two monophyletic groups of filmy ferns (Filicopsida: Hymenophyllaceae).

The "filmy fern" family, Hymenophyllaceae, is traditionally partitioned into two principal genera, Trichomanes s.l. (sensu lato) and Hymenophyllum s.l., based upon sorus shape characters. This basic split in the family has been widely debated this past century and hence was evaluated here by using rbcL nucleotide sequence data in a phylogenetic study of 26 filmy ferns and nine outgroup taxa. Ou...

Reconciling extreme branch length differences: decoupling time and rate through the evolutionary history of filmy ferns.

The rate of molecular evolution is not constant across the Tree of Life. Characterizing rate discrepancies and evaluating the relative roles of time and rate along branches through the past are both critical to a full understanding of evolutionary history. In this study, we explore the interactions of time and rate in filmy ferns (Hymenophyllaceae), a lineage with extreme branch length differen...

How early ferns became trees.

A new anatomically preserved fern, discovered from the basalmost Carboniferous of Australia, shows a unique combination of very primitive anatomical characters (solid centrarch cauline protostele) with the elaboration of an original model of the arborescent habit. This plant possessed a false trunk composed of a repetitive branching system of very small stems, which established it as the oldest...
